wadi wan tkofy

Wadi Wan Tkofy is a remote valley near Ghat in southwestern Libya where unusual round and disk-shaped rock formations dot a wide desert plain. The rocks look like giant stones from another world, so locals and visitors often call the area the Valley of the Planets. This strange landscape is the result of long geological processes that carved and shaped the sandstone into smooth boulders and carved pillars.

The rounded boulders and disk-like stones are visually striking. They range in size from small pebbles to meters-wide spheres and often sit alone or in small groups on a flat ground.

The rocks are shaped by erosion and cementation processes that acted over millions of years. Geologists compare these features to similar formations called trovants or concretions found in other parts of the world.

The setting is empty desert with clear light and wide horizons. That openness makes the round stones stand out and creates dramatic photo opportunities at sunrise and sunset.
