Tolmeita
Tolmeita is a village on Libya’s eastern coast in the Cyrenaica region. It sits between the Green Mountain (Jebel al Akhdar) and the sea, and its nearby ruins are the remains of the ancient city Ptolemais, one of the classical Pentapolis towns of Cyrenaica.
Ancient city ruins. The area preserves large Roman and earlier remains, including public buildings, houses and the outlines of streets and city walls. Archaeologists call Ptolemais an important coastal city that linked inland Barca with Mediterranean trade.
Local museum with mosaics and finds. Tolmeita has a small archaeological museum that displays mosaics, statues and everyday objects found nearby. These exhibits help visitors connect the ruins to real people who lived here long ago.
Active archaeology. In recent years archaeologists have returned to the site and published new discoveries, so Tolmeita is a place where history is still being uncovered. This makes it exciting for visitors who are interested in archaeology and ancient cities.
