Shahat
Shahat is the modern town near the great ancient city of Cyrene. Cyrene was a major Greek colony founded around the 7th century BC and later became an important Roman and Byzantine centre. The archaeological site around Shahat includes temples, theatres, houses and a large necropolis, all set on the green hills of Jebel al Akhdar.
Cyrene’s ruins. The Sanctuary of Apollo, the Temple of Zeus and other well preserved monuments give a clear sense of daily life, religion and power in ancient times. These ruins are some of the best examples of Greek and Roman architecture in North Africa.
World Heritage status. The Archaeological Site of Cyrene is a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognised for its outstanding historical value. The site is also on UNESCO’s List of World Heritage in Danger, which underlines its importance and the need for careful conservation.
A place of learning and culture. Cyrene was the birthplace of famous thinkers and scholars in the ancient world, and its ruins reflect a long cultural history that influenced the whole Mediterranean.
