Lake of Um al-Hisan
Um al-Hisan is a small freshwater lake hidden among high sand dunes in the Idehan Ubari sand sea. It is part of the Ubari oasis group, a string of lakes fringed by reeds and date palms that feel like green pockets in the heart of the Sahara. These lakes are fed by underground water and are reminders of a much wetter Sahara long ago.
The lake sits inside a sea of orange dunes, so the bright blue or green water framed by palm trees creates a very striking contrast that few places in the world can match.
The Ubari lakes system includes a number of small lakes and ponds. Some are more visited, like Gaberoun, while Um al-Hisan is quieter and often feels more private and peaceful.
