Susah (Apollonia)

Apollonia grew as the port for the great Greek city of Cyrene and later became an important Roman and Byzantine centre. Today the archaeological remains sit beside the modern town of Susah, with ruins of the harbour, a theatre by the sea and columns that give a clear sense of the site’s long history.

Apollonia is unusual because it preserves a wide range of harbour structures, docks and shore installations that show how an ancient Mediterranean port worked. This completeness makes it important for archaeologists and fascinating for visitors.

Visible Greek, Roman and Byzantine layers. Walking the site you can see buildings and remains from several periods, including the basilica with its columns and the seaside theatre. These layers tell the story of a place used for trade, religion and daily life for more than a thousand years.

The Apollonia Museum in Susa houses finds from the area and helps put the ruins in context for visitors.
